Gabriel Butterfield is the eldest son of the late, great Chicago Harmonica player Paul Butterfield, who was the first white Harmonica player to develop a style original and powerful enough to place him in the pantheon of true blues greats!!! It’s is impossible to over-estimate the importance of the doors Paul Butterfield opened.
Gabriel grew up spending the greater part of his youth traveling on the road with his father on tour.  To say the “Music is in his Blood” would be an understatement.  Like his father, Gabriel too has found music to be the driving passion of his life.  A highly accomplished singer/songwriter, drummer and percussionist in his own right, he has recorded and toured with several national artists including Sonny Rhodes, Joey Gilmore, Johnny Marshall and  Rockin’ Jake,  Blues legend Sam Lay, Mark Naftalin and Chris Parker to name a few. He has recently returned to his musical roots…and is now residing once again in Woodstock, NY.
May 4th 2012 has marked the Twenty Fifth Anniversary of Paul Butterfield’s passing, and Gabriel has handpicked a line-up to join him on stage that is sure to turn heads among music aficionados world wide.  Among those performing to to celebrate his father’s music at A Night of Paul Butterfield  will be the legendary drummer Sam Lay from the original  Paul Butterfield Blues Band; On Harp & Vocals, Steve Guyger who is considered one of the finest traditional blues harmonica players in the world today!!!;  Guitarist musician extraordinaire Jimmy Vivino and band leader for late night TV host Conan O’Brien; On Keyboards, Pete Levin has performed and recorded with Annie Lennox, Miles Davies, David Sanborn and Robbie Robertson;  On Bass, Jim Curtin a former member of the band “Orleans” and an active member of the Woodstock music community; Guitarist, Jimmy Eppard  was heavily featured on The Band’s final studio album ‘Jubilation” and was a touring/performing member of The Band; Singer guitarist Chris Castle from Sandusky, OH  whose latest album. "Last Home Bird"  of Alternative / Americana / Rockin' Root Music was recorded at the Levon Helm studio 1/12.   “These seasoned musical veterans, have all come together in mutual respect  for my father and to honor one of music’s legendary pioneers and influences, of which I am very  touched and  forever grateful” states Gabriel Butterfield.
Gabriel has been focused on collecting and archiving interviews with many of the artists that performed and worked with his father, and also those  who were influenced and inspired by him. Paul Butterfield played a pivotal role in bringing black music to white audiences in the 1960’s, when he formed the first integrated blues band in Chicago…The Paul Butterfield Blues Band.. featuring Elvin Bishop, Michael Bloomfield, Mark Naftalin, with Sam Lay & Jerome Arnold, whom he lured from Howlin’ Wolf’s Band by offering them twenty dollars a night each instead of seven dollars a week….
Gabriel and long time friend Jimmy Vivino both being fully aware of the legacy of his father, and the tremendous influence he has had in the blues world, and many other genres of music even to this day, have been working together for several years to have Paul Butterfield inducted into the Rock-n-Roll Hall of Fame; Whilst continuing to gather footage for a documentary of Paul Butterfield’s music, life and legacy.
