Bearsville Theater Presents:Ancient Soul meets Avant-Garde Folk with Epiphany Project
For 15 years, Bet Williams and John Hodian have been performing together as Epiphany Project creating music that the Washington Post called “a unique hybrid of world music, art song, Americana and avant-garde folk... utterly uncategorizable but always transcendently beautiful.”
Now based in Berlin Germany, Epiphany Project is touring in support of their new "Live in Germany" double CD of inspired imporvisations.
With an intriguing mix of ancient sacred texts (often in dead languages), hypnotic rhythms and hauntingly beautiful melodies Epiphany Project’s music is thought provoking but accessible. The compositions range in subject matter from obscure Zoroastrian prayers to the plight of Hodian’s ancestral Armenian homeland to mediations on Albert Einstein’s space/time continuum.
Classically trained vocalist and songwriter, Bet Williams has a powerful 4 octave range voice and a theatrical, charismatic stage presence. Hodian’s improvisational approach to the piano ventures into world music rhythms, free jazz and a classical melodic sensibility while weaving a perfect counterpoint to Williams’ lyrical vocals. Propelling the music forward is drummer/percussionist Mal Stein whose deep understanding of jazz and rock drumming is complemented by his command of Middle Eastern hand percussion.
