Accomplished New York sax player, vocalist, and songwriter Jay Collins brings his Brooklyn-based Kings County Band to the Bearsville Theater.
One of the most sought-after musicians in the jazz, rock, and blues arenas, Collins is a familiar fixture as a longtime member of both the Levon Helm Band and Gregg Allman & Friends. Jay is also known for his saxophone and flute work with the Allman Brothers Band, Andrew Hill, James Hunter, Jacky Terrasson, Bobby Sanabria, and the late LeRoy Vinnegar.
Now a Woodstock resident, Jay uses his gritty, unique voice and his bluesy horn to mix up blues, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and funky New Orleans style into a modern patchwork of roots-bound sound. His band’s flights of improvisation, though, as well as their musical attitude, could have only been inspired by jazz.
Collin’s latest recording is THE SONGBIRD AND THE PIGEON.
"Jay's got killer tone! Anybody who’s into a good smokin’ tenor sax—y'all in for a treat!” -Gregg Allman (Allman Brothers Band)
"With a surprisingly gruff voice, he delivers his rollicking original tunes that blend the down-and-out sensibility of Tom Waits with the barrelhouse American roots sound of The Band “ -San Francisco Chronicle/Contra Costa Times
“Collins’s soulful croak definitely deserves to be heard” -Time Out NY
