A NIGHT OF ARGENTINE TANGO & FOLK MUSIC featuring Mavi Díaz & Las Folkies with María Volonté: Blue Tango Project -- SUN. JULY 16, 2017

Doors: 7:00pm

Show: 8:00pm

Direct from Argentina, two bands lead by women bring the best of Argentine tango and folk music to the stage. Led by an Argentine musical powerhouse, Mavi Díaz & Las Folkies reinvigorates the rich folk traditions of Argentina with original compositions, a feminine point of view, and electrifying live performances.

From the colorful and gritty La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aires, María Volonté: Blue Tango Project is a ground-breaking exploration of the emotional and musical crossroads where tango and the blues embrace. In Argentina, tango is the music of the city while folk is the music of the countryside. Prepare yourself to experience Argentina’s vast geography, intense passions and rich cultural traditions in a night of musical celebration.

This all-female band is deeply steeped in the Argentine folk tradition. Daughter of harmonica virtuoso Hugo Díaz, Mavi was surrounded by the best music from an early age. A pop star in her twenties as a founding member of the path-breaking group Viuda e Hijas de Roque Enroll, Mavi went on to an illustrious career as a performer, composer and vocal arranger.

After many years living and working in Spain, Mavi returned to Argentina and founded the band Mavi Diaz & Las Folkies in 2010 to explore new expressive possibilities within the venerable Argentine folk tradition. Sonqoy, the band’s debut album, was nominated for the Gardel Award 2011 as Best New Folk Album. The band’s second album Todo Si! won the 2016 Gardel Prize (Argentina’s Grammy) for Best Alternative Folk Album. The band’s energetic live performances have received standing ovations at important music festivals in Argentina and around the world.

Blue Tango Project is a ground-breaking exploration of the emotional and musical crossroads where tango and the blues embrace. It is a collaboration between Argentine Latin Grammy nominee María Volonté and California harmonica player Kevin Carrel Footer.

This globe-trotting duo celebrates the deep spiritual bond that joins tango and the blues — two musical genres born in desire and marginality, many times censored yet always resurgent, and speaking directly to our hungry souls.

“The best-kept secret of Argentinian tango!” – Songlines Magazine

Booked at SXSW and the San Francisco Jazz Festival, nominated for a Latin Grammy, and featured on National Public Radio’s (NPR) Tiny Desk Concert Series, the María Volonté: Blue Tango Project presents powerful music with intensity and verve.

The duo has released two albums: Blue Tango (2014) and 9 Vidas (2010). As a solo artist, María Volonté has released a total of nine albums during her career.
