Purple k’niF play Maximum Surf and Hard Twang instrumentals! Imagine The Ventures with Keith Moon on drums. With an extensive repertoire of original tunes and vintage obscurities, Purple k’niF eschew the standards and ride the wild outside edge of instrumental Surf music.
Formed in 1991 in New York City, all the members are originally from Ohio, and the band takes its name from a catch phrase used by the late, great Ghoulardi (Ernie Anderson) - host of Cleveland’s Fright Night/Creature Feature TV show in the 1960s - “Turn blue you purple k’nif!” (The “K” is hard and k’niF is Fink spelled backwards). After a 12 year hiatus, Purple k’niF reformed in 2006 and have been performing from the New Jersey shore to the beaches of Lake Erie, live radio shows on WFMU-FM and touring with Los Straitjackets.
Tunes by Purple k’niF, plus The Atlantics, The Bel-Airs, The Champs, Dick Dale, Duane Eddy, The Raybeats, The Shadows, The Ventures, Link Wray and more! No CD’s, no web site, no MySpace, no records, no merchandise, no vocals! Just a night of hard-driving instrumental guitar rock: “The most fun you can have with your clothes on!”
Purple k’niF is:
Chris Butler, drums. As guitarist and songwriter, Chris was in Tin Huey in the ‘70s, leader of The Waitresses (he wrote their hits “I Know What Boys Like” and “Christmas Wrapping”) in the ‘80s, and plays with Half Cleveland today.
Ted Lawrence, guitar. Ted writes much of Purple k’niF’s original material and also played guitar in The Supertones and The Human Tornados in NYC. He remains widely unknown everywhere to this very day.
Baker Rorick, bass. Formerly in Cool It Reba, The Baxters, Life In A Blender, and a dozen other NY bands, Baker is also a steel-string journalist who writes for guitar magazines.
John Teagle, guitar. Johnny was in The Walking Clampetts, Lucky Tigers, and The Vice Royals. A vintage amplifier and guitar authority, he’s the author of “100 Years of Washburn Guitars” and co-author of “Fender Amps: The First Fifty Years.”
